Are amalgam (silver) fillings really safe?
Dental amalgam is composed of a mixture of metals (silver, tin, copper, and mercury) that gives it great durability, longevity, and the ability to withstand the strong forces of chewing.
Amalgam does contain mercury; however, multiple scientific studies have determined that it is a safe, stable, and effective material for filling dental cavities. During the placement or removal of any silver fillings, we make sure to provide constant, good suction and removal of any excess material so that no unnecessary metal is allowed to enter your body.
The American Dental Association continues to support research on all dental filling materials, including amalgam. It is a priority of our team at Pacific Plains Dental to always remain well-informed on current research to ensure that our patients are safe and receive the best care possible.
If you have a strong preference for or against amalgam fillings, please discuss it with Dr. Kuklenski. We value your opinion and want to make sure that you receive the type of restorations that work best for you.
In some cases, amalgam fillings may be the best option. If that is the case, we can share the details with you so that you can make an informed decision regarding your treatment.
