Oral Care Between Visits
Healthy teeth start with your at-home oral care routine. While dental visits are imperative to helping you maintain your dental health, it is still important to practice good oral hygiene between visits. At Pacific Plains Dental, we provide several procedures for reversing, repairing, and enhancing the health of your teeth, but we also do our best to instill in our patients the importance of preventive care at home.
Oral Care Between Dental Visits
Brushing – Brushing our teeth is our first defense against developing many dental issues. Yet, it isn’t as beneficial if we are not doing it correctly. You should start with a soft bristle brush that is the right size for your mouth. When brushing, hold the bristles at a forty-degree angle towards the gum line to help sweep food particles and plaque out and away from the gum line. You should brush for about two minutes and start from a different location every time so you don’t over clean one area and constantly miss another.
Flossing – Never skip flossing. A toothbrush can only reach so far and floss can help pick up the slack. To get the most out of flossing, hold it firmly between your fingers and slide it gently between teeth. Snapping floss between teeth can damage your gums, so it is important to use slight pressure and slide it back and forth until it works its way between your teeth. Pull the floss into a “C” shape around the sides of each tooth and glide the floss up to remove plaque.
Diet – Our diets can affect our oral health more than we realize. Diets high in acid and sugar can be reversing the benefits of proper oral care, causing teeth to decay even with regular brushing and flossing. Consuming a diet low in sugar will help you keep teeth strong and healthy between dental visits.
The basis behind preventive care is to help you maintain your oral health and avoid the need for expensive and invasive restorative dentistry.
